Whether you are installing a residential well pump, a swimming pool filter pump, or a basement sump pump, choosing the correct size is critical. An undersized pump will fail to deliver adequate water pressure, while an oversized pump wastes vast amounts of electricity and is prone to premature mechanical wear from rapid cycling.
The Relationship Between HP, GPM, and Head
Pump sizing involves three primary metrics:
- Horsepower (HP): The power rating of the pump's electric motor.
- Flow Rate (GPM): Gallons Per Minute. How much water the pump can move.
- Total Dynamic Head (TDH): Measured in feet, this is the total resistance the pump must overcome. It includes the vertical lift (how high the water is pushed) and friction loss in the pipes.
As the Head (vertical lift) increases, the Flow Rate (GPM) decreases for a given motor HP.
How Many Watts Does a Pump Use?
Pumps run on electric motors, so their wattage draw follows standard motor calculation formulas (1 HP = 746 Watts). However, pumps are heavy inductive loads and often have lower efficiencies.

Tips for Sizing Your Pump Correctly
1. Pool Pumps: Opt for Variable Speed
Older single-speed pool pumps run at 100% HP all the time, wasting massive energy. Modern Variable Speed Pumps (VSP) allow you to turn down the RPMs. Because of the pump affinity laws, cutting the pump speed in half reduces the wattage draw by nearly 87%!
2. Well Pumps: Match the GPM to your Household Demand
A typical 3-4 bedroom home requires a flow rate of 8-12 GPM. Do not simply buy a 2 HP pump if a 1/2 HP pump can deliver 10 GPM at your well's depth. Oversizing causes "short cycling," where the pump turns on and off rapidly, destroying the motor.
