What is Single-Phase Power?

Single-phase power is the standard form of AC electricity delivered to residential homes. It typically consists of a single alternating current waveform. In North America, homes are supplied with "split-phase" power (120V/240V), which is still derived from a single phase from the grid transformer.

Single-phase is ideal for lighting, heating, and small motors, but it's inefficient for heavy industrial machinery because the power drops to zero twice every cycle as the AC wave crosses the axis.

Single-Phase Power Formula:
Watts = Volts ร— Amps ร— power factor

What is Three-Phase Power?

Three-phase power is used in commercial and industrial settings. It consists of three separate AC electrical waves, overlapping and offset by 120 degrees. Because the three waves overlap, the total power never drops to zero. This provides a smooth, continuous flow of power.

Three-phase power allows for smaller, more efficient motors that don't require starter capacitors, and it can transmit three times as much power as single-phase using only 1.5 times as much wire.

Three-Phase Power Formula:
Watts = Volts ร— Amps ร— Power Factor ร— โˆš3 (1.732)
Why the square root of 3? The factor of โˆš3 (approximately 1.732) accounts for the geometry of the 120-degree phase shift between the three wires (Line-to-Line voltage).

Can You Convert Between Them?

You cannot simply wire a three-phase motor to a single-phase supply. However, you can use specialized equipment to generate three-phase power from a single-phase source:

  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs): Electronically synthesize a three-phase output from single-phase input. Great for speed control on motors.
  • Rotary Phase Converters: Use a single-phase motor to spin a three-phase generator, producing real three-phase power for a workshop.
